Match Report - 22 Feb 2014, Ammanford AFC Firsts beat Newport YMCA
Welsh League Division Two
Ammanford 5 Newport YMCA 0
Ammanford’s fans were left in jubilation as they watched their side complete a 5-0 demolition of Newport YMCA at the Recreational Ground.
In a game which saw the return of former players Luke Fayres and Matthew Fisher and the début of Dale Salvage, the fans felt a huge sigh of relief as Fisher netted four times as they gained a valuable three points towards safety.
The home side started on the front foot and took an instant stranglehold on the game.
Striker Fayres tested the opposition goalkeeper early on, but on 25 minutes Fisher marked his return with a smart shot from the right that nestled in the corner after a through ball from winger Chris Hyde.
Ammanford refused to let up though and Owen James powered forward only a minute later but saw see his shot parried by the visiting keeper.
With half-time approaching midfielder Ben Soal sent in a high ball from a free-kick. Rhys Owen headed it down for Fisher to tap in and double his tally. Despite the protests from the away side that centre-back Owen had impeded the keeper, the goal stood.
After the interval, the home side came out like a house on fire, pressing forward at every opportunity.
Their drive paid dividends when James latched onto Luke Squires’ through ball. The tricky winger found Fisher who completed his hat-trick as he rounded the keeper eight minutes into the second half.
If the fans weren’t already in raptures at 3-0, then they were jumping for joy when former skipper Fayres latched onto the ball and struck it into the roof of the net from 25 yards five minutes later.
Newport were hardly getting a sniff in the game as the hosts pressed forward in search of another goal.
Fisher lobbed wide on 65 minutes before he was teed up nicely by James for a fourth to complete the romp after the wingers initial shot was saved.
Salvage entered the fray on 70 minutes and caused trouble with his menacing pace as his cross was sent out for a corner. Centre-half Euros Griffiths met the resulting set-piece and rattled the crossbar with his header.
The visitors got their first opportunity in the game with nine minutes to go, but the chance was squandered as Jamie Rano watched it sail wide.
After enjoying a successful second debut for the club, forward Fisher nearly got a fifth late on but his shot was tipped over the bar.
