Match Report - 15 Mar 2003, Ammanford AFC Firsts beat Blaenrhondda
Evans' an inspiration
12:00pm Wednesday 19th March 2003
DESPITE making life difficult for themselves against 10-man Blaenrhondda, Ammanford eventually claimed three vital points thanks to a goal in each half.
The win was inspired by captain Steve Evans who received the plaudits for his man-of-the-match display.
In a bruising opening quarter both teams were determined to come out on top. Having watched as an Ian Jones header narrowly cleared the cross bar in the 15th minute, Ammanford were forced to wait until the half hour mark before being awarded their first corner.
Just a minute later, the visitors had No.8 Carl Lewis sent off for a second yellow card. This should have given Ammanford a huge advantage but it didn't turn out that way as Blaenrhondda stepped up a few gears.
But, after a sustained period of pressure, Ammanford were rewarded a penalty for hand ball. Although John Anderson converted the resultant spot kick, the referee ordered a re-take but, unperturbed, up stepped Anderson again to slot home. Although coming under considerable pressure from the spirited 10-man outfit, Ammanford had an inspirational leader in Steve Evans whose outstanding performance helped steady the ship.
The homesters dominated the second half but failed to convert a host of chances. Even though the Blaenrhondda defence was becoming increasingly stretched, the one goal lead still seemed a little too close for comfort. But the gaps continued to appear in the visitors' defence and 25 minutes from time captain Evans played the ball out of defence before linking well with John Anderson who supplied a defence-splitting pass to Gavin Porter who finished confidently from a tight angle to claim all three points.
On Saturday Ammanford are home again to Grange Harlequins. The seconds went down 3-1 away to Seven Sisters and are away again on Saturday to Newcastle Emlyn.
A bus has been organised to take supporters up to Cardiff for the Wales v Azerbaijan game on Saturday, March 29. It will be leaving Betws Soccer Club at 11am and will leave Cardiff at 6.30pm. Limited seats are still available at £7 each. Anyone interested can contact Steve on 07811 897976.
