Match Report - 03 May 2003, Ammanford AFC Firsts lost to Dinas Powys
12:00pm Saturday 10th May 2003
Dinas Powys 5 Ammanford 2 Welsh League Division 2
AMMANFORD took a depleted squad to Dinas Powys, who were crowned champions in midweek, and the lack of experience was the most telling factor between the two sides.
Missing six key players in keeper Craig Morris, Sean Cresser, Matthew Thomas, Steven Francis, Tex Ward and John Garland, it was always going to be difficult but the scoreline doesn't give a fair reflection of the match as a whole.
Ammanford gave a totally committed, one-hundred per cent performance and shocked the champions by taking a tenth minute lead through Ian Jones.
But they could only hold on to it for five minutes as Dinas Powys equalised. This did not deter Ammanford, however, and they continued to put the home defence under considerable pressure, often asking questions of the back four.
Like true champions though, the hosts answered in the best possible fashion and duly took the lead just three minutes before half-time.
Buoyed by their timely second goal before the interval, Dinas Powys hit the track running after the break and extended their lead ten minutes in.
Ammanford deservedly got themselves back into the game as they pulled a goal back in the 70th minute, a superb individual effort from Ian Jones who slotted in for his 17th of the season.
But after putting the home side under intense pressure with at least three further goal scoring opportunities going amiss, Ammanford eventually capitulated as Dinas Powys wrapped up the match with another two goals before the final whistle.
It was a tremendous team effort by the visitors who put in an excellent performance against the league's outstanding side.
Opportunities went begging from both teams, but Ammanford had by far the best chances and although it looked like a hammering, they were more than equal to the league champions.
