Match Report - 21 Sep 2002, Ammanford AFC Firsts beat Morriston Town
Welsh League Division 2
Ammanford 4-3 Morriston Town
AMMANFORD were back to winning ways on Saturday with an excellent 4-3 win against local rivals Morriston Town.
Ammanford pressurised the Town defence from the kick-off and it took a superb save from Craig Mansel to deny the unmarked Tex Ward who saw his header tipped away for a corner.
Ammanford deservedly took the lead in the tenth minute when Matthew Thomas won a great tackle and sent Morrys Scott through, who drew the keeper before slotting the ball into the net.
Morriston then forced Ammanford to defend desperately and had their reward when Dean Benniamonis scored from close range.
Keeper Craig Morris came to Ammanford's rescue just minutes later, blocking a point-blank shot. Ammanford then began to control matters when, latching on to a loose ball, John Anderson coolly slotted home under pressure.
And they went 3-1 up on the half-hour when Ian Jones unselfishly drew the 'keeper before setting Anderson up for his second from close range.
Ammanford dominated for the remainder of the half and wasted two opportunities to wrap up the match before the interval.
Having started the second half confidently, Amman were then brought back down to earth with a bump when Morriston went on the attack and scored just five minutes into the half through another Benniamonis goal.
With Ammanford now at sixes and sevens, the defence leaked another goal with the second half just ten minutes old.
But they regained their composure and were rewarded when Sean Cresser delivered a great cross for Tristan Lewis to finish with a superb header. That proved to be the decisive goal as Ammanford held on for a thrilling win.
The seconds also gained a good result as they drew 2-2 away to Morriston.
On Saturday the firsts are away to Fields Park (Pontllanfraith) and the seconds are home to Gwynfi Utd.
