Match Report - 15 Sep 2001, Ammanford AFC Reserves lost to Haverfordwest County
Three goal Preddy powers Bluebirds
12:00pm Wednesday 19th September 2001
HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY 5 AMMANFORD TOWN 1
A Meadow crowd of fair size watched the Bluebirds Welsh League side weather a sluggish spell late in the first half to end with a strong second half and complete, by the finish, a thoroughgoing demolition job on a quite sprightly Ammanford outfit.
The visitors were quite a small side and it rapidly became clear that their forwards were going to get little change out of the Blues towering central defenders Paul Luke and Tom Billing.
It equally became clear, very rapidly, that their defence had little answer to the pace and persistence of home striker Mike Preddy, who had grabbed a brace of goals within the first quarter of an hour.
The first goal followed Lee Hudgells precise cross, the second came after a neat flick-on by Anthony Roberts, and on each occasion the quicksilver Preddy surged forward to bury his shot with complete aplomb.
A third goal nearly followed when Simon Gilderdale went on a surging run down the right and at this stage the Bluebirds were comprehensively in the driving seat.
The 17-year-old Gilderdale, a product of the Bluebirds Youth Academy, exuded class at right wing back and the game was being won in midfield by the industry and guile of Brett Hawkridge and Jamie Gilderdale. There followed a spell of twenty minutes, through to half-time, when the Bluebirds seemed to go off the boil.
Matters worsened just three minutes into the second half when their defence seemed to go to sleep for a moment and allowed Ammanfords Jason Joshua to nip in and pinch a goal back.
Curiously this first goal in open play against them this season seemed to sting the Blues into action.
The pressure built again and they went further ahead in the 53rd minute, when first of all a fine run by Anthony Roberts saw his cross cleared to Hudgell and the winger being brought down.
Tom Billings resultant free kick was inch-prefect and was powered into the net by Paul Lukes header.
Increasingly now, Roberts, with some deft lay-offs and some strong running, and Hudgell, with some mazy running down the left, were pushing the Bluebirds on, and a fourth goal came almost at once when a miss-hit shot by Roberts was helped in by Preddy for a deserved hat-trick.
Preddy could have made it a personal four after one of the best moves of the game, when a beautiful Hudgell cross was chested down neatly by Roberts into Preddys path and the strikers finish was inches wide.
Efforts by Hawkridge and Roberts went just over, before, in the 80th minute, following a corner, a Hudgell shot was blocked and Luke pounced for his second goal.
This was a good win and this is a good and entertaining Bluebirds side to watch.
It is hoped they will be well supported again for their next home game, against fellow-high-flyers Neath, on Saturday 22nd September, kick-off 3 pm.
