Match Report - 30 Mar 2002, Ammanford AFC Firsts beat Maesteg Park
Turning the tide
12:00pm Wednesday 3rd April 2002
Ammanford 3 Maesteg Park 1 Ammanford who had won their two previous matches away from home had high flying Maesteg Park.
Third in the league Maesteg had beaten Ammanford 4-0 in their last encounter. Ammanford were without Malcolm Vaughan and Danny Hadfield.
Ammanford's Matthew Thomas was the first to threaten the visitors goal with a 50 yard run but his shot was saved comfortably by keeper Tucker. A fine move involving Cerison Davies and Laurie Inman saw Inman's shot just cleared.
Ammanford were playing at pace causing all sorts of problems for the visitors and deservedly went a goal up when defender Rhodri Robinson set up a great chance that Davies put into the net. A Maesteg free kick was wasted when it found centre forward Jones, but he headed wide from close range.
Ammanford were desperate to increase their slender lead and they were rewarded with a second goal when a through ball to Aled Rees saw the centre forward pulled down well inside the penalty area.
With just the keeper to beat, the No.5 was sent off and Rees put his stop kick into the net for a deserved 2-0 lead. Five minutes later with another missed goal chance in between, Ammanford made the game safe when a great move involving Aled Rees and Cerison Davies, set up a chance for Martin James.
They started the second half as they left the first with pressure on the visitors goal . A John Garland free kick went off a defender for a corner and Anderson with a one to one on the keeper lobbed the ball just wide. Maesteg pulled a goal back with just five minutes left after a rare defensive lapse.
This win puts Ammanford in a good position for the hard run in to the seasons end with three straight wins and are unbeaten at home since Christmas.
On Saturday they are home again to Ely Rangers, kick off at 3pm. The Seconds are home tonight (Thursday) to Briton Ferry, kick off at 6.30pm and are away on Saturday to Garden Village.
