Match Report - 26 Oct 2002, Ammanford AFC Firsts drew with Treharris Athletic
Captain proves his worth
Ammanford 1-1 Treharris
AMMANFORD had captain Steven Evans back after a long injury and he proved his worth with a solid display at the back.
Both teams were evenly balanced at the start but Treharris went a goal up in the 25th minute when a Justin Clarkson free-kick was headed into goal at the near post by Craig Howells.
Although Ammanford had the visitors under severe pressure, they were unable to find a breakthrough and went in trailing at half-time.
Tony Cottee again created an impression in midfield and man-of-the-match John Anderson caused panic in the visitors defence every time he had the ball.
Tex Ward and John Garland were also dominant at the back both in the air and on the floor.
Sticking rigidly to their task, Ammanford continued to dominate throughout the second half and deservedly equalised with a Sean Cresser goal after 20 minutes play.
Visiting keeper Robert Jones was at his best to deny Ammanford on more than one occasion while at the other end, his opposite number Craig Morris, despite not having much to do, pulled off one tremendous save.
Ammanford were a little unlucky when keeper Rob Jones held John Anderson back when he was clear, but the decision went against Ammanford.
On reflection it was a match that Ammanford could, and probably should, have won, but managers Wyn Jones and Neil Petherbridge were more than happy with the overall team performance.
Football in the Community Officer Huw Preece presented Ammanford with two match balls before kick-off.
Meanwhile, the seconds five match unbeaten run came to an abrupt end, losing 6-1 on Friday night to league of Wales side Afan Lido.
Next Saturday Ammanford are away to Dinas Powys. Kick off times are now 2.15pm.
