Match Report - 14 Dec 2002, Ammanford AFC Firsts beat Pontypridd Town
A striking chance
Welsh League Division 2
AMMANFORD 1-0 PONTYPRIDD TOWN
AFTER GAINING a draw in the last encounter with Ammanford back in October, Pontypridd have lost only one of this season's matches.
And if it wasn't for a freak goal from Ammanford in this match, the signs were all there for another Ponty win. The first shot at goal came from Ammanford after 20 minutes with Morrys Scott setting up John Anderson. It went wide and Pontypridd replied, but even though he had just the keeper to beat, No 9 Lee Brown also sent his shot wide.
So after a dour opening, it was left to Ammanford's Anderson to bring a little spark to the match with his exciting run for goal just before half time.
Intercepting the ball deep in his own half, Anderson raced 60 yards upfield but was beaten by Ponty keeper Leigh Morgan.
Ammanford started the second half the sharper team eventually scoring in the 55 minute after being awarded a free kick 30 yards out and just to the left of the penalty area.
A crowded goal mouth cause confusion amongst the Pontypridd defence allowing Anderson to scramble to ball home.
For Ponty, loosing a player seemed to inspire the team to work harder. But a shot at goal in the 70 minute by No 10, Richard Haig failed to go in, sailing over the cross bar from eight yards.
Although Ammanford stole the three points, it was not one of the better performances.
But it does mean two wins on the run. Ammanford take on AFC Llwydcoed at Rice Road next Saturday at 2.15pm.
The seconds also take on Gwynfi away in the reserve division.
Although denied a match for five weeks, the fixtures have now been sorted out and there should be regular games until the end of the season.
