Match Report - 24 Mar 2012, Ammanford AFC Firsts drew with Aberbargoed Buds

Nick Davies at the Rec Ammanford earned a crucial point in the race for Second Division survival against relegation rivals Aberbargoed.

Rhys Morgan was the hero of the hour, confidently slotting home a 75th minute penalty equaliser to save home blushes.

The Buds had grabbed the lead seven minutes before the interval afterdominating midfield as a l a c k l u s t r e Ammanford lost the aerial battle and lacked the firepower to create any clear cut chances.

ItwasAberwho started brighter, but Ammanford created the first chance only to see the ball cleared off the line early on.

However, as the Buds pressed, the chance arrived and the ball was headedpast keeper Jamie Rano with less than 10 minutes to go in the half.

Aquickfreekick gave Ammanford a late opportunity to level before the break, but Morgan blasted over.

During half time Ammanford made one change, bringing on Owen James to add a greater goalscoring threat as they looked to widen their attacking options.

Aber, meanwhile, declined the use the changing roomsduring the interval in scenes reminiscent of Phil Brown’s notorious on-fieldhalf- time team talk at Hull.

ButAmmanford created the first opportunity of the second half only for the ball to be cleared by the desperate Buds defender.

As the clock ticked on, a defeat for Ammanford seemed likely – especially when they gave away the ball in theirown third.

But during a late sortie intoBuds territory earned the hosts a lastgasp reprieve as the official pointed to the spot for a dubious penalty and Morgan stepped up to smash home a well-taken penalty and claim the all-important point for Ammanford.
