Match Report - 11 Nov 2006, Ammanford AFC Firsts beat Grange Harlequins

Grange Quins 3 Ammanford 4 Shamrock Travel Cup.

Ammanford created a great goal chance in the 10th minute when Paul Jones sent Dean Jenkins through. But his shot was well saved with a full length dive by the keeper.

Ammanford deservedly went 0-1 up in the 20th minute, when Liam Preece was brought down inside the penalty area.

He took the kick himself to put Ammanford 0-1 up. It looked like 0-2 just minutes later but Luke Fayres was adjudged to be off side. Grange had a great chance on 30 minutes but Richard Walton brought off a fine save.

Minutes later Ammanford increased their lead with a well taken goal from Luke Fayres. Ammanford mainly through Dean Jenkins were creating chances and were in total control when a terrible lapse in concentration left the Grange centre forward straight through the middle unchallenged to score and they equalised after just 2 minutes into the second half when a corner caught the defence flat footed and gave a gift to Grange to equalise 2-2. Ammanford were finding it hard to contain the home team after being reduced to 10 men with a sending off only for Quins to suffer the same fate 10 minutes later.

Ammanford went back into the lead with a second goal from Luke Fayres in the 60 minute. But although having at least four great one on ones with the keeper Ammanford paid the price when they again lost concentration and saw the Quins score to 3-3. It took some great saves throughout when called upon by keeper Walton but Paul Jones scored from the penalty spot. A fully deserved victory against first division opponents that puts Ammanford into the last 16.

Meanwhile the Reserves drew 1-1 against local rivals Cwmaman with a Rhodri Robinson goal. The reserves are away to Afanlido, Friday night and the Firsts are home to Merthyr Saints Saturday, k.o 2pm. Ammanford celebrated their cup victory with their gentlemens evening at the Civic centre with Joey Jones and Robert Croft as guest speakers. The club wishes to thank all for their attendance and support for a successful and enjoyable end to the Saturday.
