Match Report - 12 Mar 2005, Ammanford AFC Firsts beat Merthyr Saints
AMMANFORD picked up a vital win in this relegation shoot-out at Merthyr.
The visitors were once again forced into changes as keeper Craig Morris was serving a one-match suspension while Gavin Morris and Michael Donne were also unavailable.
They were also without the injured Nathan Jones but were given a huge boost when Brian Davies declared his availability, despite having only just returned from Australia -- and how Ammanford benefited from his commanding presence.
The Saints made the early inroads and keeper Davies was called into action to snuff out a Gavin O'Conner opening. Top-scorer O'Conner was at it again minutes later but again he was smartly shut out.
A tremendous Ammanford move involving Gary Davies, who went from deep inside his own half, looked destined to end in a goal, but his shot went inches over.
An effort from Merthyr's Kerry Mullins was well held by keeper Davies before Ammanford broke the deadlock five minutes before half-time when Jamie Harris put in a pin-point cross from the right that Tristan Lewis converted.
Ammanford became more dominant as the match progressed largely through the efforts of man-of-the-match Steven Francis. They deservedly went 2-0 up after an hour with a goal of pure class from Paul Fowler.
Goalscorer then turned provider as Fowler fed Paul Hughes who scored from a difficult angle.
Ammanford lost their shape after the third goal and were pegged back when Merthyr scored twice within the space of eight minutes.
They regained their composure at just the right time and finished strongly to claim a very important three points.
l On Saturday Ammanford are home to Newport YMCA (ko 1.30pm), while the Seconds -- who beat Carmarthen Town 2-1 courtesy of goals by Cerison Davies and John Anderson -- are without a game.
