Match Report - 18 Dec 2004, Ammanford AFC Firsts lost to Tredegar Town
DEVASTATED Ammanford crashed at home to promotion hopefuls Tredegar after conceding a winner five minutes into injury time.
Despite Tredegar having the majority of the play, it was the visiting keeper that was kept the busiest as Ammanford created the better goal-scoring opportunities.
Ammanford had the luxury of picking from a strong squad with just Cerisan Davies and long-term injury victim Steve Evans missing.
In poor conditions it was always going to be a huge challenge for Ammanford, but they started well and Gavin Morris created the first goal-scoring opportunity.
Tredegar soon settled down to put Ammanford under pressure, mainly through man-of-the-match Steve Edwards, who was the outstanding player on the pitch.
Time and again he caused problems with his ability to cross the ball at pace and he supplied a great ball for striker Lawrence Davies, who failed to direct his header goal-bound from close range.
Ammanford, although defending for most of the half, created two great chances to score.
Nathan Jones was first to go close as his shot was deflected wide.
Then, from the ensuing corner, Jamie Harries put in a great cross that was headed inches wide by Tex Ward.
Ammanford did well to keep the score 0-0 at the interval and with the introduction of Paul Hughes and Mark James off the bench in the second period, it gave the home side added impetus.
They came more into the game as conditions worsened and Paul Hughes forced keeper Kriss Morris into two tremendous saves as Ammanford pushed for the winner in the final quarter.
But it was not to be and in the fifth minute of injury time, Tredegar centre-half Nicky Ward found himself unmarked and headed in from just a yard out.
Despite the result, it was a tremendous effort by Ammanford who put in an excellent performance in testing conditions.
Ammanford's next league match is on January 8 when they travel to Garden Village.
