Match Report - 03 Feb 2007, Ammanford AFC Firsts beat AFC Llwydcoed
Llwydcoed 1 Ammanford 2 Macwhirter Welsh League Division 2 AMMANFORD sit in 7th position in Division 2 after this hard-fought but deserved victory.
The first corner of the match went to Ammanford when Dean Jenkins looked well-placed to cross into the box.
But a deflection won a corner that, although well placed by Liam Preece, was eventually cleared.
It took the best of Ammanford keeper Richard Walton in the 15th minute with a great save on a one to one.
Another Preece set-piece, this time from a free kick, caused panic in the home defence. But Preece had the last word when another set piece this time from a corner again caused panic in the home defence.
Although Ammanford's defence was stretched at times they continued to attack strongly and when Dean Jenkins found space and the keeper off his line after some frantic defence work, Jenkins put in a high lob from 25 yards over the keeper into an open goal.
But Llwydcoed were soon on the attack and equalised when their centre forward went through and shot in challenged from outside the penalty area.
The second half started very much as the first with new signing Steffan Hughes getting into a scoring position but his shot was charged down.
Nathan McNeill pushing up in support of the attack then created another chance for Ammanford from a long throw-in resulting in the home keeper dropping the ball inside the six yard box, but scrambled clear.
Ammanford continued to push forward for a winning goal and although against the run of play scored the vital winner when another corner again caused panic on Preece, played the ball into the six yard box where Paul Buckingham knocked a crucial header down to the ever alert Luke Fayres who made no mistake with a close range goal.
Although Llwydcoed are bottom in the second division they looked and played as a much better team than their league position and over the 90 minutes had every right to have expected something out of the match.
But full credit to Ammanford who again scored a vital winning goal in the last quarter of the match.
They are home to Tredegar Saturday, kick off 2pm and then have another three home matches. T he reserves followed up last Saturdays away win with another win this time at home beating Llwycoed 3-0. They are away next Saturday to Pontardawe.
