Match Report - 16 Feb 2008, Ammanford AFC Firsts lost to UWIC
Uwic 2 Ammanford 1 Ammanford started confidently against promotion favourites Uwic and had a penalty appeal for a foul on Dean Jenkins in the 15th minute.
Uwic replied with an attack that was eventually cleared after a superb fingertip save against the cross bar by Richard Walton.
Ammanford, with probably the youngest team they had fielded in the Welsh league, were not out of their depth and created a great chance in the 25th minute when Paul Jones sent Dean Jenkins through but the keeper just got a touch on the edge of the penalty area.
Uwic created a great chance for a goal when they broke clear into the box with only keeper Walton to beat but Cerith Williams raced back and pulled off a superb tackle deep in the penalty area.
Ammanford created another two chances before the halftime whistle with Lee Stones and Shaun Fander both having chances. Ammanford continued to attack at the start of the second half and when it looked as if Dean Jenkins was through inside the Uwic half he was fouled and the defender booked but Jenkins was not to be denied and scored a fantastic 35 yard goal when he caught the home keeper off his line and lobbed the ball into the net for a deserved lead.
Dean Jenkins was creating all sorts of problems to the home team and won a 65m free kick on the left edge of the penalty box when he was fouled again but Paul Jones' shot hit the side netting. Disaster then struck for Ammanford when Uwic were awarded a disputable free kick on the right hand side, ten yards outside the penalty area and scored with a well taken goal. They repeated the feat ten minutes later with a replica goal, that again came from a dubious.
Ammanford continued to attack and with just two minutes left, Shaun Fenders effort for goal beat the keeper and hit the cross bar back into play. Ammanford were worthy of at least a point and were for long periods by far the better team with Paul Jones outstanding throughout, and all 11 players played their part in restoring some pride after last Saturdays result.
The reserves went down 3-0 away to Newcastle Emlyn.
The firsts are home to Llanwern Saturday, kick off 2pm. The reserves have no fixture to date
