Match Report - 27 Oct 2007, Ammanford AFC Firsts drew with Llanwern

After taking a point off second placed UWIC at home last week Ammanford shared the spoils again this Saturday at third placed Llanwern.

Ammanford were the first to settle down and a move involving Dean Jenkins, Richard Lewis and Liam Preece saw Preece go just wide with a low shot.

It looked like a hand ball inside the penalty area in the 15th minute but the referee failed to point to the spot.

The visitors continued to take the game to Llanwern and in another sustained attack the home number 11 was booked for pulling Liam Preece when he went passed him.

Dean Jenkins was creating havoc in the Llanwern defence and Liam Preece and Nathan McNeil created half-chances for themselves before Ammanford deservedly took the lead just minutes from half time, but they could have done without the incident.

The goal camewhen Lee Stone put through a brilliant ball into the box for McNeil who was flattened by the keeper and was laid out before being taken off and replaced.

The keeper was booked and Liam Preece made no mistake with the spot kick.

In the second half, a Lee Stone effort was brilliantly kept out and he then put in a great goal saving tackle just minutes later.

Much against the run of play a defensive lapse saw keeper Richard Walton punch out of goal but the clearance was fired into the net to make the score 1-1.

Ammanford continued to run Llanwern ragged and youngster Dean Ellis came on for the injured Richard Lewis.

Llanwern were put under so much pressure in the last quarter of the game that they could have easily scored three goals in the last five minutes with Cerison Davies having two well-placed efforts cleared from the goal line somehow and shots scrambled or blocked.

Ammanford showed that they are good enough to compete against any team in the division and they are home to Ely Rangers on Saturday.

The reserves lost 2-0 at home to Newport YMCA.

The club wishes to announce that ex Liverpool star Alan Kennedy is their guest speaker at their annual event on November 10, tickets are available from the club.
