Match Report - 20 Oct 2007, Ammanford AFC Firsts drew with UWIC
AMMANFORD look to have turned the corner after totally out-playing promotion favourites UWIC on Saturday.
Ammanford, desperate for a win had a great challenge in store with potential league leaders, who had conceded just seven goals all season.
They again started disastrously - conceding a lobbed goal over keeper Richard Walton in the first two minutes from Mathew Stevens.
The hosts had a penalty appeal after ten minutes when a Nathan McNeil cross appeared to be handball, but the decision was not given.
Minutes later McNeil put in a long throw to the unmarked Terry Ward who headed just wide.
Another McNeil long throw-in found Luke Fayres, but the visiting keeper Mike Lewis pulled off a great save.
The home side started the second half as they left the first, with Richard Lewis creating a great chance for Dean Jenkins but another great save by keeper Lewis again.
Ammanford were not to be denied and deservedly pulled a goal back ten minutes into the second half when a UWIC player stopped a certain goal with a deliberate hand ball on the goal line, he was red-carded and Liam Preece made no mistake from the spot kick.
Ammanford then put the visitors under intense pressure at the back and should have scored with shots deflected or blocked in a sustained attack.
However UWIC cleared the danger deep into the Ammanford half and somehow scored with Ammanford's two defenders and keeper failing to clear.
Ammanford, who continued to play high quality football deserved something with their play and a great run and cross from Cerith Williams to Nathan McNeil went inches over the cross bar, but McNeil made amends later with a close range goal after keeper Lewis kept one shot out with an outstanding save.
At the final whistle Ammanford were in complete control and although they only gained a point they had outplayed UWIC in all departments.
With the performance and attitude showed over the 90 minute surely they have now turned the corner, and have a great chance Saturday against top three team Llanwern away Saturday.
*The reserves are home on Saturday to Newport YMCA in the Harries Printers Shield having qualified with a previous win against Garden Village.
