Match Report - 04 Apr 2009, Ammanford AFC Firsts beat Caerau (Ely)
Caerau Ely, a team Ammanford beat easily earlier in the season, proved a much improved team in the return encounter.
They started strongly and forced three corners in the opening 10 minutes, Ammanford’s reply a Richard Thomas header that went just wide.
Ammanford had another chance on 15 minutes when Dean Jenkins set up Geraint Jones for a shot that was deflected for a corner.
Caerau were giving Ammanford plenty to think about and scored after 20 minutes. A through ball looked to be going over the byline but they somehow managed to keep it in and James Cottrill made no mistake, scoring at the near post.
Minutes later Richard Walton pulled off a superb one-on-one save to keep the hosts in the match.
Ammanford equalised after 35 minutes when a cross from Dean Jenkins, who found space wide on the left, enabled youngster James Murray to score a well-taken goal.
There was a further chance on 40 minutes when Jenkins looked clear, but was adjudged offside.
Caerau Ely had not come to settle for a draw and gave the Ammanford defence plenty to think about, but the home side were finding space deep in Caerau’s half and after threatening on occasions towards the last quarter managed to score in the 80th minute.
The goal came from Jenkins who had his first shot blocked by the ’keeper before scoring from a wide and acute angle.
The result made it four straight wins for Ammanford who are away to Maesteg tonight and home to Garw on Saturday.
Ammanford Reserves lost 2-1 away to league leaders Afan Lido and are home to Bryntirion on Thursday, kick off 6.15pm
