Match Report - 28 Feb 2009, Ammanford AFC Firsts lost to Ely Rangers
It was a really brave effort, but a late second-half goal due to a rather fortuitous rebound prevented Ammanford having at least a share of the spoils against promotion certs Ely at The Rec.
Ely are second in the Macwhirter Welsh Football League division two table and impressed during the first half, with Ammanford having to pull out all the defensive stops to keep them at bay.
Ammanford had a very early penalty shout denied when Shaun Fender was pulled down inside the penalty area. Ely gave a sigh of relief and then set up a dangerous attack, which culminated in striker Sean Nash advancing towards Ammanford keeper Richard Walton at a rate of knots.
The Ammanford shot-stopper kept his nerve and stuck a foot out to push Nash's point-blank shot wide of his inside post. Walton followed up with another impressive save when he palmed a deceptive lob on to the underside of his crossbar while stepping back on to his goal-line.
Ammanford 's attacks were sporadic during this period, but in the 25th minute Richard Lewis gave the visitors a scare when his free-kick was only gathered safely by Ely keeper Hilaire Mountembie on his second attempt.
Although under the cosh, the stalemate scoreline remained, and to their credit Ammanford turned the tables on their opponents and were much the better side in the second half.
A much-practised free-kick eventually went for a corner, with James Murray flying up from full-back to help out. As Ammanford continued to cause problems, it was Ely who managed to edge 1-0 ahead in the 75th minute. Winger Anthony Haggi saw his initial shot saved by Walton but made no mistake with the rebound.
Ammanford continued to press, and with Ely down to 10 after a sending off, an equaliser looked on the cards. However, it wasn't Ammanford 's day and they were forced to settle for an impressive performance but without any goals or points.
AmmanfordAFC are home to Treharris on Saturday, with Ammanford Reserves away at Port Talbot
