Match Report - 07 Feb 2009, Ammanford AFC Firsts beat Pentwyn Dynamos
AMMANFORD jumped five places up the table with this deserved victory on Saturday, in what turned out to be the only game played in the entire division.
The visitors started strongly and Luke Fayres had a chance after a quarter of an hour, but his shot went over the bar, Two minutes later ’keeper Richard Walton was called into action when he was left facing a one-on-one with the home striker, before Richard Thomas stepped in with a last-ditch tackle.
Rhys Fisher then put the hosts under more pressure with a jinking run and cross the defence could only scramble for a corner.
Walton was then forced to make a superb full-length diving save from a 25-yard snap shot that was heading in, and he pulled off another remarkable save minutes later to keep the scores level at the break.
The second half started as the first had ended and the impressive Walton denied Pentwyn once again with another point-blank save.
Ammanford’s pace, however, was a constant menace, but although they were putting the home defence under pressure, they were guilty of taking too many wrong options.
The turning point came on the hour when, just a minute after Walton had produced three remarkable saves in a goalmouth scramble, Ammanford broke away to take the lead.
The goal was scored by Richard Lewis who somehow managed to get a shot in after turning three defenders.
Lewis turned provider minutes later when he and Paul Jones worked a short corner and whipped the ball in for Luke Harris to head into the back of the net.
Cerith Williams, who was once again outstanding in defence, had a chance to extend the lead further, but his header went just wide.
Striker Fayres was determined to get in on the act and finally got himself on the scoresheet with a superb 25-yard shot to secure the win.
It was another great Ammanford performance and they now sit 9th in the table, eight points off top spot.
Of their remaining fixtures, they play 11 at home and just five away, with the next match taking place on Saturday when they entertain second-placed Penrhiwceiber.
Ammanford Reserves do not have a match on Saturday.
Their scheduled game against Afan Lido was postponed last weekend.
