Match Report - 08 Nov 2008, Ammanford AFC Firsts beat Treharris Athletic
AMMANFORD secured a thoroughly-deserved and much-needed victory in awful conditions on Friday night.
This was a must-win match for Ammanford against bottom club Treharris.
The first chance of the match came Treharris’s way on five minutes when a free-kick hit the post.
Ammanford then had Treharris very much on the back foot.
But the break they needed did not come until the 25th minute, when Luke Fayres scored from close range.
Five minutes later, Ammanford’s keeper Gruff Harrison pulled off a superb block save when he was exposed to a one-on-one.
It was an important save as Ammanford went 0-2 up on 35 minutes when Mathew Fisher got first to a Cerith Williams ball and outjumped the defence to score.
Just two minutes later centre half Richard Thomas scored after pushing up field in support of Ammanford’s attack.
Disaster then struck for Treharris when the home keeper went off injured.
Within minutes of the restart for the injury Luke Fayres had a header that hit the cross bar but that man Fisher made no mistake in the 42nd minute.
Just minutes into the second half Robert Thomas scored a quality goal to go but some poor defending saw Treharris pull a goal back with a quickly taken free kick.
They pulled another back soon after but then a Fisher free-kick hit bar again before Fayres scored his second.
Richard Lewis then turned scorer from provider before the hosts pulled another goal back. But Ammanford had the final say with a quality goal from Matthew Jones to secure a worthy and deserved win.
Ammanford are away on Saturday against Grange Harlequins (Cardiff).
The reserves had their fifth win on the bounce, beating AFC Llwydcoed 4-3 and are home again next Saturday to Briton Ferry.
All matches are now 2pm kick off.
