Match Report - 27 Sep 2008, Ammanford AFC Firsts beat Tredegar Town
Ammanford 2 Tredegar 1 Macwhirter Welsh League Division 2 Ammanford’s players, despite defeats in their previous three league matches, were made aware that their play had been much better than results suggested and responded magnificently with a well-deserved first league win of the season against a strong Tredegar outfit.
Although Ammanford had much the better of the opening exchanges, there were few goal chances for either team.
Ammanford had a great chance after 30 minutes when a Luke Fayres effort was superbly saved by the Tredegar ’keeper, but Ammanford were beginning to create openings and when Dean Jenkins went clear, only to be brought down inside the box, the penalty was put away by Richard Lewis.
Ammanford scored again within three minutes of the second half when a cross from a set piece gave Richard Thomas a chance to create space for himself and score superbly with a first-time volley.
Youngster Ben Sole, who went on as a substitute, began to create more pressure and a great shot produced an equal quality save.
A Fayres long-range lob over the ’keeper went just wide before Tredegar pulled a goal back in the 81st minute, but Ammanford finished the stronger, putting pressure on the visitors’ defence.
Next Saturday Ammanford are away to Pentwyn Dynamos in the second round of the Welsh Cup.
The Reserves lost 3-1 away to Seven Sisters and are again away on Saturday, to Goytre United.
