Match Report - 13 Sep 2008, Ammanford AFC Firsts beat Caldicot Town
Welsh Cup Round One Caldicot Town 0 Ammanford 1 Ammanford, who had the tough task of travelling to Welsh League Division One leaders Caldicot, pulled off a thoroughly-deserved Welsh Cup shock.
With Dean Jenkins unavailable through injury, new signing Richard Thomas made his debut for the struggling Second Division team, having signed after playing at Barry Town last season.
Ammanford started positively with Cerith Williams going upfield in the opening ten minutes and beating four players before having his shot charged down.
When home ’keeper Smallcome came off his line after 15 minutes, Luke Fayres put in a 25 yards lob that went agonisingly close with the ’keeper in no man’s land.
After 30 minutes a clearance from deep in Ammanford’s half bounced over the home defence and only a superb block by the goalkeeper kept Fayres’ shot out.
The more the match progressed the better Ammanford got with Richard Lewis causing mayhem every time he had the ball.
With the defence giving nothing away, it looked as if Ammanford had won a penalty after 47 minutes when Lewis was brought down well inside the penalty area, but play was waved on.
Robert Thomas was the next to test the home defence when he put himself in a scoring position, but his shot, with just the ’keeper to beat, went just over the bar.
In a rare Caldicot attack, ’keeper Walton saved at the cost of a corner.
From here on it was all Ammanford with just one attack of note going Caldicot’s way, Cerith Williams cutting out a dangerous break.
Ammanford went on to dominate the last 30 minutes and their inevitable goal was well worked.
After a four-man move, Richard Lewis put in the pass that sent Fayres clear inside the box. He fed Christian Davies who had the final scoring touch.
By the 90th minute, Ammanford were winners by just one goal, a fair result.
However, Fayres could have had a hat-trick, such was Ammanford’s domination, and they deserved to go into the next round.
This Saturday Ammanford are again away to First Division Caldicot in the League Cup.
Ammanford Reserves added to the day’s winning results, beating Newcastle Emlyn 3-2. They are away to Pontardawe on Saturday.
The next round of the Welsh Cup will be played on Saturday, October 4.
