Match Report - 16 Aug 2008, Ammanford AFC Firsts lost to Llanwern AFC
Llanwern 3Ammanford 2 Macwhirter Welsh League Division 2 AMMANFORD got off to a disappointing start to the new season after slipping to an opening day defeat to ten-man Llanwern.
The first chance of the match fell to Luke Fayres but the keeper saved the shot at the second attempt.
Ammanford lost Dean Jenkins on 20 minutes with an injury and Llanwern, although not putting Ammanford under much pressure, scored with their first attack of any note.
Llanwern soon increased their lead but their cause was not helped by a red card.
Ammanford came flying out of the traps after half-time, pulling a goal back to make it 2-1 just a minute into the second half though Richard Lewis should have had an equaliser minutes later.
Despite Ammanford piling on the pressure, it was Llanwern who scored next, although Ammanford’s offside appeals looked justified.
Nick Watkins then came off injured before debut youngster Ben Sole scored a wonderful headed goal from a Richard Jenkins cross.
Although Ammanford put Llanwern under pressure in the last minutes of the match, it was not to be and Llanwern deservedly held out for the three points.
Ammanford have no matches Saturday but play Newcastle Emlyn on Wednesday, August 26, at 6.30pm.
The reserves start their season at home to Ystradgynlais on Saturday at 2.30pm
